Co-Founder & CTO at Collar
This Executive Interview was submitted by the profile owner and published after SoftwareWorld editorial review.
I’m Ahmad Alhasan, Co-Founder and CTO of Collar, where I’m focused on building technology that makes running a pet-care business simpler, smarter, and more efficient.
Over the past 10 years, I’ve worked across different areas of software engineering, building products, solving complex technical problems, and learning what it takes to turn ideas into reliable software that people use every day. Those experiences shaped how I think about technology: the best software isn’t built for the sake of technology itself, but to solve real problems and make people’s work better.
At Collar, we’re bringing that mindset to the pet-care industry. I’ve seen how much of the industry still relies on disconnected tools, manual processes, and systems that weren’t designed around the realities of running a modern pet-care business. Our goal is to change that.
I want Collar to become the technology platform that powers the next generation of pet-care businesses, helping teams spend less time dealing with operational complexity and more time doing what they do best: taking care of pets and building lasting relationships with their customers.
We’re not just building another piece of pet-care software. We’re building toward a future where running a pet-care business feels as modern, connected, and effortless as the best software experiences people have come to expect elsewhere.
The need we set out to address was straightforward: pet-care businesses were coordinating bookings, customer information, payments, staff schedules, and updates across separate tools or manual processes. That can leave owners spending time on administration and teams without the context they need during a busy day. We wanted to make the operational side of pet care easier to run while giving customers a clear way to book and stay informed. Because a grooming appointment, a daycare visit, and an overnight boarding stay have different requirements, the software also needed to adapt to each service rather than assume one booking pattern. Collar has grown around that practical aim: connect the work from the first enquiry through the visit and the next booking.
Many products solve one part of the job well; the challenge for a pet business is keeping those parts connected. Collar brings service bookings and schedules together with pet and owner information, staff workflows, billing, customer communication, and repeat-visit tools. Businesses can set rules and capacity around their own services, and decide how much of the booking process to automate. That flexibility matters because grooming, boarding, and recurring daycare do not run in exactly the same way. For customers, a connected workflow means fewer repeated questions and clearer updates. For the team, it means less switching between systems and more context when handling a booking. We focus on practical fit rather than claiming that one setup suits every business.
Collar is designed for pet-care businesses including dog daycares, grooming salons, boarding and kennel businesses, trainers and behaviourists, dog walkers and sitters, and pet parks or other bookable spaces. It can also suit operators that combine several of these services or run more than one location. The strongest fit is usually a business with recurring bookings, different service rules, capacity or staff schedules to coordinate, and a need to keep pet and owner information alongside the work. A small single-service team can use the same core workflows, while a multi-service operator can configure them to reflect the differences between services. The right setup depends on each business’s actual operating model.
The product stands out through the way its core workflows work together. Businesses can accept and manage bookings, set service-specific rules and availability, coordinate capacity and schedules, and keep pet and owner profiles, forms, notes, and service history close to the appointment. Collar also supports deposits, payments and invoices, customer messaging that can include photos or videos, memberships and packages, and reporting. The pet-owner app gives customers a place to explore services, book, pay, and stay in touch. These capabilities address the full service journey rather than only the calendar. Teams can choose manual review or automate parts of the process, so they can keep the level of control that suits their business and customers.
We ask businesses to judge value against the work the platform takes off their hands and the visibility it gives them. A useful comparison includes time spent coordinating bookings and staff, handling payment follow-up, moving information between tools, and answering avoidable customer questions. It should also consider whether a smoother booking experience helps customers return. The benefit varies with the size and complexity of the operation, so we avoid promising the same return to every business. Collar offers plan options for different needs, and the best starting point is to map the features in a plan to the processes a team actually wants to improve. Businesses can then assess the fit against their own time, costs, and service goals.
We keep close to the people using Collar and the work they need to get done. Customer conversations, support questions, and patterns in day-to-day workflows help us understand where the product is creating friction and what has become a priority. We then weigh requests against reliability, security, usability, and the needs of other businesses, rather than adding features in isolation. Technology is useful when it solves a real problem, so we evaluate new approaches against practical outcomes and make changes iteratively. For example, Collar offers AI-assisted scheduling for businesses that want to automate more of the booking process, while retaining options to review requests manually. That balance lets customers adopt automation at a pace that suits them.
In ten years, I hope Collar is a dependable operating platform for pet-care businesses as they grow: useful to a solo operator, and still coherent when a business adds services, staff, or locations. The long-term direction is to keep connecting the customer journey with the operational work behind it: booking, pet context, team coordination, payments, communication, and insight into performance. We also want the experience to keep pace with how owners and teams prefer to work, including on mobile. Our plans will be shaped by customer needs and by changes in the sector, so I would not treat a fixed list of future features as a promise. The constant is helping businesses deliver good care with less operational friction.
Pet owners increasingly expect to manage services from their phones, so Collar provides a mobile app where they can explore a provider’s services, make bookings, pay, and communicate with the business. They can exchange messages, photos, and videos, and receive useful reminders and updates. Businesses can also offer online booking through their own portal, giving customers a convenient route into the service. Our focus is to make common tasks clear on a small screen and keep the information connected to the business’s workflow, so a customer’s booking does not become a separate, disconnected conversation. We continue to listen to both providers and pet owners as their mobile habits and expectations change.
We treat integrity, privacy, and compliance as ongoing responsibilities. Collar’s published security information describes encrypted data and secured requests, and card payments are processed by Stripe, whose payment infrastructure is PCI Service Provider Level 1 certified. That is Stripe’s certification, not a claim that Collar itself holds that certification. More broadly, we aim to handle customer and pet information carefully, keep the product dependable, and review the obligations that apply as we serve businesses in different markets. Requirements can vary by location and by the nature of a customer’s operation, so we avoid presenting compliance as a one-time checkbox. Maintaining trust means continuing to review how information flows through the product and how our partners support those flows.
Healthy relationships start with listening and being clear about what the product can do. We aim to understand how each business works, help it configure services and booking rules to fit, and make it straightforward to get support when questions arise. Customer feedback also informs what we improve, although we balance an individual request with the needs of the wider customer base and the reliability of the platform. Collar gives businesses practical ways to keep their own customers informed through confirmations, updates, messages, photos, and reports. That helps providers build trust with pet owners through the service itself. We want our relationship with customers to work the same way: useful communication, realistic expectations, and steady improvements based on real use.
A lasting product challenge has been supporting very different kinds of pet-care work without making the software feel complicated. A grooming appointment, a boarding reservation, and a recurring daycare booking each bring different rules, schedules, capacity needs, and information. A rigid workflow would not fit them all, while unlimited complexity would make everyday tasks harder. We have addressed this by building configurable service rules and schedules around shared operational foundations, then improving the product as we learn how businesses use it. That approach lets a team shape its setup without losing the benefits of connected bookings, records, payments, and communication. The lesson has been to stay close to real workflows and treat flexibility and simplicity as requirements that must be designed together.
