About Wasteless

Every year, U.S. grocers generate nearly five million tons of surplus food, and much of it ends up in a landfill instead of a shopping cart, a loss that costs retailers roughly double what they'd have earned from selling it in the first place. Founded in 2016 with offices in Amsterdam and Tel Aviv, Wasteless set out to fix this by making a perishable item's price fall exactly as fast as its shelf life does, using AI instead of a store clerk's rough guess about which items to discount.

The engine runs on reinforcement learning, a branch of machine learning that studies how shoppers actually respond to price changes and finds the discount that moves product without giving away more margin than necessary. Employees scan incoming stock with a phone or barcode scanner, the system pulls the expiration date automatically, and from there pricing adjusts continuously based on freshness, demand signals, seasonality, and even brand popularity, showing up on electronic shelf labels in-store or directly at online checkout. The results back up the pitch: retailers using Wasteless have reported cutting food waste by up to 80% while lifting revenue on perishables like meat, poultry, and fish, all without retailers needing to touch a spreadsheet or second-guess a markdown decision themselves.
